Children's Classes

The Kirklees Baha'is host a wide variety of activities and events which are open to all. Out of these, three core activities are offered to the wider community; Devotionals, Study Circles and Children's Classes.

Devotionals allow participants to meditate and reflect on the sacred scriptures of the Baha'i Faith and other world Faiths. Study Circles provide the opportunity to study a particular topic with a small group of people. In Children's Classes, children are taught moral and spiritual values.

Study Circles

In the world-wide Baha'i community the study circle has become a popular and effective method of learning. A group of people come together to systematically study a series of courses by the Ruhi Insitute. These courses are lead by a trained facilitator and are open to all.

Participants in these courses learn, for example, to teach values to children, to engage in community service activities, to assist and empower others to independently investigate spiritual truths, to learn how to competently express one's views, and to engage oneself in serving the broader needs of society for unity, justice, and equity. The participants often experience a new sense of direction in life, better relationships with family and friends, and a fruitful re-evaluation of the contribution one can make to the wider community.

The Ruhi Course currently consists of seven books:

Book 1 - 'Reflections on the Life of the Spirit'

Book 2 - 'Arising to Serve'

Book 3 - 'Teaching Childrens Classes Grade 1'

Book 4 - 'The Twin Manifestations'

Book 5 - 'Teaching Childrens Classes Grade 2'

Book 6 - 'Teaching the Cause'

Book 7 - 'Walking Together on a Path of Service'

"Whensoever a company of people shall gather in a meeting place, shall engage in glorifying God, and shall speak with one another of the mysteries of God, beyond any doubt the breathings of the Holy Spirit will blow gently over them, and each shall receive a share thereof."

(Abdu'l-Baha, Selections from the Writings of Abdu'l-Baha, p. 94)

There are many and varied Devotional gatherings or meetings held in Baha'i centres, homes or in community centres. The aim of these uplifting meetings is outlined below:

"The nature of these gatherings is for prayer, meditation and the reading of Writings from the Sacred Scriptures of our Faith and other Faiths; there can be one or a number of readers; any Baha'i chosen, or even anon-Baha'i, may read. The gatherings should be simple, dignified, and designed to uplift the soul and educate it through hearing the Creative Word."

(Compilations, Lights of Guidance, p. 607)

Here is a short description of the types of devotionals that are regularly held in the Kirklees region:

Musical Devotionals; where music is part of the programme in a welcoming and intimate environment. Often Prayers and Readings from the Sacred Texts (some of all Faiths) are sung.

Tranquillity Zones; where the room is made to look beautiful and calming, soft music is often played and there is time to meditate and reflect.
